We started out by having our English teachers bring their classes to the library to checkout books a few days before the week of the event. Our objective was to have EVERY student in our high school checkout a library book. Teachers and staff were encouraged to checkout books, as well. We had over 400 books checked out!!
We had several activities going on throughout the week:
• Design a Bookmark Challenge - Students could design a bookmark and have it displayed in the library for viewing. The bookmarks were judged by teachers and staff. The winning bookmarks were printed and placed at the circulation desk for distribution.
• Guest Readers - We invited coaches, administrators, and people from the community to come and read to some of our students. We also had some of our students visit the elementary and read to the younger students.
• PAWS for Reading - At random times throughout the school day, our administrative assistant would announce over the intercom that it was time to stop what you were doing, get out your library book, and read. This was usually during the last 5-10 minutes of class.
• PRIDE Time “It’s All About Reading” - PRIDE is our intervention/enrichment/SEL period. During Read Across HHS Week, our PRIDE time was devoted to reading. Each teacher was allowed to choose how they spent this time, whether it was reading aloud to the students, having the students do a book study, book talks, book discussions, or even just quiet time to read.
• “What are you reading?” Walk-bys - Teachers and admin would catch students as they walked by in the hallway and ask them,“Hey! What are you reading?”. We would give the students candy, bracelets, bookmarks, or stickers if they told us about their book.
Students were also encouraged to ask their teachers what they were reading. • Teachers and staff were asked to display a sign outside of their classroom that told what book they were reading.
• Book Covers and Reading Boards - Students were given the opportunity to create book covers and/or reading boards based on a book that they had read.
READ ACROSS HHS WEEK
